101 Devotionals for Boys #50

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one  is based on a story from Return of the White Book: True Stories of God at Work in Southeast Asia (Hidden Heroes #4).

***************

The people of the Karen village of Chikku had been given a book many years before. Now, because they honored books so much, they were worshiping it. Since they couldn’t read it, they asked missionary George Boardman to tell them what it was.

It turned out to be a Book of Common Prayer. “It’s a good book,” said George “but you shouldn’t worship it. Worship Jesus Christ alone.” That very day the Guardian of the Book gave up his special robes and rod and turned to Jesus Christ.

Does it sound silly to you to worship a book? You might be surprised at how much this same kind of thing happens today. It can happen to a person without his even realizing it. People can exalt and honor a Christian leader or even the Bible so much that they’re turning to something God made instead of to God Himself. Don’t make that mistake. Worship Jesus Christ alone.

“And when I heard and saw [these things], I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.’” ~Revelation 22:8-9

Lord God, when my heart turns to love and exalt something or someone more than You, show me. Help me to worship You alone.
