101 Devotionals for Boys #36

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one  is based on a story from Witness Men: True Stories of God at Work in Papua, Indonesia (Hidden Heroes #3).

***************

One day before Sunday meeting, a handsome tribal man named Rigwi sat fingering his long black braided hair. The missionary told him his hair looked nice.

“Why do you speak good words about my hair?” Rigwi sneered. “Don’t you know I grow my hair like this to shake it at the women and at the spirits? Why do you talk about it looking nice?”

Suddenly he stood up. “This hair is of the old way. I will get rid of it.” He turned to the other Christians who had gathered. “You may want to keep your hair, but not me.” Then to everyone’s surprise he stomped away.

When Rigwi returned, his hair was gone. “I’m done with the old way,” he said. “I want to follow the Jesus path.”

Maybe something in your life is keeping you from following Jesus fully. Other people may not even realize that it’s a hindrance to you, but you know, and God knows.

Jesus “saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

“And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.” ~Luke 5:27-28

God, show me what is standing between me and You, like Rigwi’s hair. Help me to get rid of anything that keeps me from following You with all my heart.
