101 Devotionals for Boys #35

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one  is based on a story from Witness Men: True Stories of God at Work in Papua, Indonesia (Hidden Heroes #3).

***************

After singing their songs about killing their enemies, the tribal men came to church.

“You say you want to follow Christ,” the missionary John Dekker preached. “But your lives aren’t matching up with what you claim. You need to beware. In Luke 11:24-26 Jesus said,

“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”

Have you just swept out your house without inviting the Holy Spirit inside? You can go to church and sing without really worshiping.  You can look like you’re really paying attention, and speak politely. But God knows if you’re only pretending. He hates hypocrisy, but He loves those who truly love Him.

Lord God, help me to not just clean out the house, but also to invite the Holy Spirit to control my life. Thank You that You offer me that power.
