101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one is based on a story from Living Water in the Desert: True Stories of God at Work in Iran (Hidden Heroes #6).
***************
William Miller read from the gospel of John to the Muslim men in the marketplace. “‘As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,’ ” he read, “‘even so must the Son of man be lifted up.’ That means that Jesus had to die on the cross,” he added.
“No, that’s ridiculous,” interrupted the men, waving their hands. “That’s the foolish notion of the Christians. Your book is corrupted. Everybody knows Jesus didn’t really die on the cross. Why would a prophet die on a cross?” They walked away.
But that’s the way God made for our sins to be cleansed and for us to have eternal life, William thought. But they were gone.
Many people think that the Word of the cross is foolishness, but it isn’t. Anyone who has believed in that Living Word, Jesus Christ, has experienced the power of God. Those who haven’t will not know eternal life.
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” ~I Corinthians 1:18
Lord Jesus, help me to see that the Word of Your cross is the way to eternal life in You. Help me to be faithful in giving that Word to others, even when it seems that they don’t want to listen.
