101 Devotionals for Boys #24

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one is based on a story from Return of the White Book: True Stories of God at Work in Southeast Asia (Hidden Heroes #4).

“Teacher Judson paid my debt and set me free.” Those were the words of Thabew, a man of the Karen tribe, to missionary George Boardman.

“Teacher Judson” that Thabew referred to was Adoniram Judson, who had come as a missionary to Burma years before. When he gave Thabew the gospel and Thabew believed, Adoniram Judson did what he could to release him from captivity.

“He paid my debt and set me free.” Thabew had a great debt, having murdered over thirty people. Money could never really fully pay it. But Adoniram Judson cared, and wanted to teach him and bring him into discipleship of Christ.

“He paid my debt and set me free.” Ultimately, this is no truer of anyone than it is of Jesus Christ. Through His death on the cross, Jesus Christ paid Thabew’s debt in full and set him free from slavery to those rages that had caused him to hurt so many.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” ~John 8:36

Lord Jesus, thank You that you have paid the debt of everyone who trusts in You. You have set us free from slavery to sin. I worship You for what You have done!
