101 Devotionals for Boys #66

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one is based on a story from Living Water in the Desert: True Stories of God at Work in Iran (Hidden Heroes #6).

***************

In 1979, the country of Iran underwent a massive revolution. The man who took over, the Ayatollah Khomeini, promised peace and plenty, but all he brought was violence and famine. The whole nation groaned under his harsh rule.

Now mission work was completely different. Now Christianity was illegal, and Christians had to meet in secret—it was extremely dangerous because they could be killed by the government. There were only a few hundred Christians in the country anyway. Surely Christianity would be completely wiped out.

Have you ever noticed that when terrible things happen, that’s when people start really turning to God for help?

Just like in so many countries throughout history, when great persecution began in Iran, that was when the church began to grow exponentially. More and more people were coming because life was terrible and they were so hungry for something true and real that offered them hope.

“And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the LORD.” ~Judges 6:6

Dear God, help me to turn to You not just when things are terrible, but all the time. Help me to be there for other people who are looking for something true and real, so I can offer them the hope of Jesus Christ.
