101 Devotionals for Boys #21

101 Devotionals for Boys from the Lives of Great Christians and 101 Devotionals for Girls from the Lives of Great Christians will both be published in 2017. We’re publishing one or two devotionals a week to give you a taste of what you’ll get in those two gift books. This one is  based on a story from Lights in a Dark Place: True Stories of God at Work in Colombia (Hidden Heroes #5).

***************

José desperately wanted power.  He read in the New Testament about the power of the apostles and the power of Christ. “I want this power!”

“I’ll become one of those evangélicos. I won’t smoke or drink, and I’ll spend all my time reading the Bible.” But the darkness and fear didn’t leave. Instead of power, he sank into depression. Where was the joy the Bible promised?

The way of Christ’s power isn’t found by rules.

“I know. I’ll speak those magic words that I used before to call up that evil spirit—” but his whole body felt sick at the thought. He knew that way led to death.

The way of Christ’s power isn’t found in special words.

José cried out, “God! Release me from this terror!” He went to the Christian meeting and sang with  them, “Oh, I want to walk with Christ.” Then the Lord freed him and filled him. José found power to become a new man.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” ~Acts 1:8

Lord God, others may promise me power, but You have said that the true way of power is found by faith in Christ alone. Help me to walk in that way.
