Chapter 7

Christian Dogs (Hossein, part one)

 “Hey, Hossein!” The boy’s uncle called from the doorway.

Four-year-old Hossein came running. “Yes, sir?”

“I saw you talking to those Christian dogs!” His uncle leaned down till his face was only inches from the boy’s. “Don’t ever talk to them, you hear me? Did you know that their parents used to be Muslims, but now they’re Christians? There is nothing lower on this earth.” He leaned down and shook his finger in the boy’s face. “Don’t you ever—” his face grew bright red “—ever talk to those vile, filthy Christian dogs again! Don’t even go near them!” He spat on the ground.

Hossein nodded at his uncle without a word. He turned to look at his four-year-old friends. They were Christian dogs.

Chapter 8

Arise and Eat! (Hossein, part two)

When Hossein arrived at his home, he first greeted all of his family with hugs and smiles. Then he began the speech he had prepared.

“Mother, I have some very good news.” He could feel his heart pounding, but still, somehow he felt peace. “I’ve found the answers to many of our life questions.”

Hossein’s mother, grandfather, and uncle all looked quizzical, guarded. “What do you mean, my son?” his mother asked.

“I’ve found the true salvation of my soul. Back when I was so sick in the hospital, a prophet appeared to me in a dream and told me to arise and eat. Then I was healed.”

“Which prophet was it?” Hossein’s grandfather still seemed guarded, his arms folded across his chest.

“It was the prophet Isa, Grandfather. Jesus Christ.”

The older man stood silent, his eyebrows lifted.

“Jesus Christ has shown me the way to the true God. He has shown me that He is God Himself. I’m a Christian, and now I’ve found—“

But Hossein couldn’t say anymore. His uncle slapped him across his mouth.

“You are not!” his uncle yelled. “You are a Muslim, and you will never be a Christian! How dare you utter such blasphemy! You will renounce this Christianity today, right now, this minute!”
