Living Water in the Desert: True Stories of God at Work in Iran, chapters 13-14

Chapter 13

Blood of the Martyrs, Seed of the Church

Pastor Soodmand was dead! He had been killed by the Iranian police, who said he was a criminal for becoming a Christian and evangelizing.

They had warned him, they said. They had warned him to stop. But he just wouldn’t stop talking about Jesus. Anyone who left the holy religion of Islam deserved to die!

But he knew he couldn’t stop giving the Living Water to those around him. So in 1990 he became a martyr for the Savior he loved.

Chapter 14

The Imam Worshiper (Padina, part one)

Eighteen-year-old Padina gasped. There was a hole in her black stocking! A hole as big as a coin! Surely someone could see her ankle!

She ran back inside the House of Zeinab from her sweeping, heaving and sobbing with terror. If anyone had seen her ankle, then in heaven Allah could treat her like a yo-yo, sending her down to hell to burn her feet and ankles and legs, over and over and over.

Desperately Padina rummaged through her things, looking for an intact stocking. “I didn’t do it on purpose!” she whispered through her chattering teeth. “I’m trying to do everything right!” Oh how desperately she wanted to do everything right.

“I can see a little bit of your hair sticking out from your scarf!” hissed one of the other girls. “You could burn in hell forever! Or Allah will hang you from your hair.”

Padina began shaking back and forth and holding herself with her arms. “I didn’t mean to!” she whispered. “I didn’t mean to!”
