News from Dick McLellan, missionary to Ethiopia

Dick McLellan, a veteran missionary to Ethiopia with SIM (Sudan Interior Mission, now Serving in Mission) and the vehicle for the stories in the children’s book With Two Hands, just sent me his Christmas letter.

Among other things, though he is in his mid-eighties, he says that he is hoping to make the trip to Ethiopia from his home in Australia—again. This after almost dying from health problems a year ago. Like Dr. John Dreisbach, the subject of a tribute in my post last week, Dick McLellan just keeps going and going and going.

He also just finished writing a new set of stories about the work of God in Ethiopia, similar to his first one, Warriors of Ethiopia, on which my children’s book was based. I’m sure it will be another cracking book, as the Scottish say.

I’m very humbled and extremely excited to have the privilege to work with and write about men and women who have given their lives in the service of God, for the love of Jesus, in such a way. Not only the western missionaries, but all the national missionaries that they represent.

If you haven’t yet, I’d like to invite you to read the sample chapter of With Two Hands! by clicking on the “Children’s Books” tab above. This missionary book for children is due out in March in the U. K. and in May in the U. S. I pray that it will be one of many books used of God to fan the flame of the next generation.

Oh, I know one part of his family! I don’t mind having a read. I’ll ask Eva or her dad for a book to borrow.

    Hi there
I have just finished reading the entire Hidden Heroes series to myself. Amazing Rebecca. Thank you so much for your diligence in researching and putting these stories together. We just started reading With Two Hands with my children tonight. Amazing!!! We live in Australia and wondering if Dick McLellan is still living here in Australia? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you for your comment–I almost didn’t see it, since it went to spam. Last I knew, Dick McLellan was still in Australia–yet I have to admit, I haven’t gotten an update from him since this blog post.

And thank you for your encouraging words! I really enjoyed writing that series, and am sorry that Sonlight Curriculum decided not to carry one of them (they do carry all the others, though!) God bless you.

My wife, Charlotte, and I had a chance encounter one night in Addis Ababa at the SIM headquarters. Dick was meeting some of his many evangelists. His evangelist for the evening was unable to travel to Addis Ababa We sat and talked. It was a “life changing” encounter. God bless this humble man. The stories in his two books plus Vidal’s book have FOREVER influenced our lives. We are now 79 and 80 and have made two additional missionary trips because of their stories.

I just saw the comment created by my Wayne. When we met Dick, we were staying at the Sudan Interior Mission compound in Addis Ababa. Our team (including Wayne) left for Wolita Soto. I remained behind to teach weaving to a lady associated with Hannah’s Orphan Homes. During my time without my team…Dick was there. We ate together and spent many hours chatting. I loved hearing him pray. What a privilege. Truly!!! What a privilege. He enriched our lives and for this, we’ll forever be thankful. We have longed to have more time with him. But, it isn’t to be. We pray God’s blessings on this man of faith…this mighty man of faith…HIS gentle servant…

With Two Hands has been an unforgettable read (as are all the others in the series) but this one was the first I read to my children. Tears poured down my cheeks as I read about the lengths God went to, to save those He has called. I reaslised that this is true for every believer…Thank you.
